The air is turning crisp and cooler. The leaves are changing colors and dropping from the trees. It is wise to keep a few important Fall safety tips in mind during this time. With proper precautions and safety awareness, you and your family can enjoy the beautiful autumn weather while avoiding some of the dangers that come with the season.

  • Fire dangers are all around. Have your furnace serviced, clean your fireplaces, use space heathers as directed and keep candles away from pets and small children.
  • Change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. A good time to remember to do this is at daylight savings time. This year it falls on November 1st. Remember to “Fall” back an hour!
  • Watch for wet leaves on the road when driving. Their colors are beautiful to look at, but they become slippery when wet.
  • Consider keeping an emergency kit in your car; windshield washer fluid, blankets, salt or kitty litter, flares and other items that sometimes required.
  • Keep alert for an increase in deer activity. Fall is a time for mating and migrating, so be aware of darting deer on the roads.
  • Exercise caution during Halloween. Use reflectors, flashlights and glow stick for visibility.
